Facebook VS Google’s Orkut in Brazil: WIN!

In my previous article, I posted research results from Lab42. Another firm, comScore, brought Facebook good news after it released its research results.Facebook finally overtook Orkut and became the most popular social network in December 2011 in Brazil.

For anyone who has never heard about Orkut, it is also a social network which was launched by Google in 2004. It is very successful and popular in Brazil, where 60% of Orkut users are located. Since 2008, Orkut has been hosted and managed by Google Brazil.

However, according to comScore, the number of Brazilians, who visited Facebook pages, increased from 12 million in December 2010 to 36 million in 2011, a huge increase. On the other hand, Orkut only gained around 2 million visitors within the same time frame.

“Facebook’s rapid ascent in the Brazilian market has certainly been one of the most interesting stories to develop during the course of 2011,” says Alex Banks, comScore managing director for Brazil. “Brazil has always been a particularly social market and currently owns the fifth largest social networking populationin the world. But despite the cultural affinity for social media, Facebook adoption had traditional lagged in the market.”
